Breastfeeding Education & SupportPrenatal breastfeeding class: It is
recommended that couples take a prenatal breastfeeding class. Our approach to breastfeeding
education is based on understanding the newborn’s natural reflexes and the maternal hormonal
cocktail that occurs at the time of birth. Anatomy and physiology of the newborn and the breast
will be discussed in detail. Ways to support the newborn to self attach will be discussed. Couples
will learn how to know if the baby is latched well and how to know if the baby is getting enough.
Couples will learn what to expect in the first days and weeks of breastfeeding. The role of the
partner will be discussed. Emphasis on establishing excellent breastfeeding patterns and
relationship is stressed in this initial breastfeeding education session. Additional education is
available upon request topics may include: breastfeeding beyond the first 6 weeks, how to
breastfeed in public, pumping and returning to work.
Lactation consultation: In home lactation consultation is available. Almost all moms and babies can
breastfeed with the proper approach and support. If you are running into difficulties or have lots
of questions, an in home visit with Sarah or Amy may completely change your breastfeeding
relationship for the good. Our philosophy is to tune in to the baby and mother and let them tell
the story of what is needed. The wisdom lies within and we simply help to uncover and identify it.
